The recipient of bursaries to study at Dartington International Summer School, he has since performed in the Dartington Festival and been made official accompanist of TWIYCA. Marcus was the winner of the Jaques Samuel Pianos Trinity Prize, the Trinity Silver Medal and the Tunbridge Wells International Young Concert Artists Accompanist Prize (TWIYCA). Marcus’s first teacher Yvonne Dinwiddy had been a student of Russian pianist and composer Nicholas Medtner, leading to a close interest in his music and a debut CD featuring works by Beethoven, Medtner and Carl Vine. He was then invited to participate in the Fondazione Culturale Wilhelm Kempff Beethoven Masterclasses with John O’Conor. Marcus studied with Yvonne Dinwiddy, Simon Young and Neal Larrabee, gaining degrees from Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance and the University of Connecticut where he was awarded the Storrs Scholarship and a Graduate Assistantship. The trio performed romantic piano trio repertoire from both countries and their debut CD “Fantasia” was received with acclaim by Gramophone magazine. He was a pianist of the Backman Trio for six years, touring the UK and Finland and recording for YLE 1 radio. He has been a regular performer for concert societies and festivals across the UK and has performed across the world from Atlanta to the Lebanon. Paul’s Sinfonia and Andrew Morley and has broadcast live on BBC Radio 3 “In Tune”. He has recently completed a Beethoven piano concerti cycle with St. to work with them towards ABRSM exams and diplomas, and to encourage them to. Every Chethams student is assigned an individual accompanist as part of. or as an instrumentalist with an accompaniment, you should work with your accompanist, (so choose a good one) at balancing the parts in the ensemble. At the beginning of their Chetham’s career, students sit down with members of the accompaniment team to discuss their needs and musical interests, and are assigned to a specific accompanist accordingly.

Accompanists’ dedication to their students is demonstrated by their willingness to travel with them to external competitions and performances, to work with them towards ABRSM exams and diplomas, and to encourage them to share their repertoire with peers and public audiences.Īll five members of the accompaniment team are recognised performers in their own right, and perform regularly with professional artists as well as students during masterclass-recitals in School. The programmes for these concerts are planned to enable students to continue playing with an accompanist with whom they are familiar, giving them the confidence to play to the very best of their ability.
The team of five accompanists play a central part in maintaining Chetham’s active programme of eight Lunchtime Concerts in School, and regular performances across the region and further afield.
Frequently, students, instrumental tutors and accompanists will come together to work on specific pieces in preparation for performance.
This long-term partnership enables students to build a strong relationship with their accompanist, strengthening and challenging their solo performance skills. All Chetham’s students, other than pianists, are assigned an individual accompanist with whom they will usually work throughout their School career.
